POLYCAB SIGNAL CABLES

ere are various kinds of cables available in the market and each differ in terms of function and performance. Thermocouple cables, solar cables, halogen cables, optical cables and other specialty cables are widely used for various significant purposes. However, there exists a less known kind of cable, which has significantly occupied a major place in the cable sovereignty; they are known as Instrumentation cables. At first look, instrumentation cables may seem similar to other thick sheathed cables. However, your assumption would prove wrong when you compare its appearance with its performance. Instrumentation cables are not basic cables. They transmit signals from one end to the other with absolutely no distortion. Made of 99.99% pure EC grade copper, the conductors of these cables are treated as per the industrial standards for superior conductivity, flexibility and elongation. These cables are insulated with high quality PVC, which is capable of handling external temperature above 85 degree Celsius. Unlike ordinary cables which have a single protective sheath, these cables have multiple protective barriers, that protect it from high temperatures. Formed by firmly twisting a bunch of cables together, these cables are enveloped with translucent non-hygroscopic polyester tape, also known as Mylar tape. The thickness of these tapes vary from 20 to 50 microns and are scientifically enclosed to protect the cables from moisture and exceeding temperature. These cables usually bear a copper-braided shield or are enclosed in a poly-aluminum tape. The inner sheath of these cables are made of PVC and its thickness varies depending upon the size of the cable. However, the minimum thickness of the inner sheath is about 0.3mm. Constructed with Galvanized Iron, the robust armour used in these cables protect it from technical and mechanical damage. Mostly used for industrial applications where power generation and distribution play a major role, Instrumentation cables are designed to cater to engineering and micro-processing segments. EHV SHEATH VOLTAGE LIMITER BOX

 Raychem link boxes have reliable design and the housing (1) is made of stainless steel. The enclosure is water and dust
tight type tested to fulfill the requirements of protection class IP68 for installations below ground. For other applications, 
e.g. indoor installation, link boxes with less protection class are also available. Designs are capable of withstanding different
electrical demands for several voltage classes. The link box lid is lockable (2) by a standard security deadlock. The optional
sheath voltage limiters (SVL) (3) are made of zinc oxide and are designed to meet the requirements of IEC 60099-4. Link
boxes with SVL’s are available for different voltage classes and provide active over-voltage protection that contributes
directly to improved reliability of the system. The indoor post-insulators (4) made of epoxy resin are light weight and
provide reliable electrical performance. The cable entries (5) are available with different inner diameters to fit single core or
concentric cables with different cross sections.
For perfect sealing, cable entries are protected with coated heat shrink tubes (6). Sheath bonding cables are fixed by
various methods with compression lugs (7) or by using clamping rings. The tinned copper

POLYCAB HV XLPE cables are manufactured at its most modern manufacturing setup in
DAMAN. Manufacture of HV XLPE CABLES requires great care and skill at all stages of
processing. Work on HV cables has shown to raise the electric stress of XLPE cables it is
essential that the extruded insulation is of high cleanliness without any imperfection, free of
contamination, voids and manufacturing defects, and that the screen interface is smooth. In
addition an integrated extrusion plant employing a Continuous Centenary Vulcanizing (CCV)
process line (Dry Curing Line) is required. Polycab easily met these two criteria by carefully
selecting imported insulating materials and by installing 2 CCV lines sourced from world
renowned manufacturers. (Fig 1)
The cable core is triple extruded and crosslinked in the fully enclosed process in which the inner
“semi-conducting” screen, the XLPE insulation and the outer semi conducting screen are
applied simultaneously (Fig 2) to the pre-heated cable conductor. Specialized in-line inspection
techniques using X-rays are employed to monitor the dimensional accuracy of the extruded
core. These examinations confirm the correct levels of dimensional accuracy.
The final stage of HV cable manufacture is the high voltage test, which comprises an HV
withstand, and a partial discharge detection test. These tests take place in Polycab’s
sophisticated HV Test Lab (Fig 3). The tests are of short duration, typically 30 minutes, and are
capable of detecting the defects that initiate partial discharges, as small as one “pico-coulomb”.
Such defects lead to gradual deterioration of the XLPE and eventually breakdown
